Renting from a stranger, without getting burned
Peer-to-peer rental works because most people are reasonable. These are the handful of habits that separate the smooth rentals from the bad ones.
Meet in daylight
A public place, during working hours, ideally at a police station with parking. Many police stations have a "meet here" system built for exactly this.
Test it in front of them
Shoot a clip, ride the bike, run the projector. If it does not work now, it will not work for you either.
Photograph everything
Existing scratches included. Send both sets to the owner on WhatsApp so there is a shared record.
Agree the damage rule
In writing, before money changes hands: what is fair wear, and who pays for what.
Questions
The awkward ones
Safety questions
- Should I pay an advance before seeing the item?
- No, not for a first rental. Meet, handle the item, confirm it works, and only then pay. For a longer rental a small advance after meeting is normal, but never an advance to someone you have never met in person.
- How do I document handover?
- Photograph the item before you take it and again when you return it, including any existing damage. Send the photos to the owner on WhatsApp so the timeline is in a thread you both keep. This settles almost every deposit dispute.
- What if the item breaks while I have it?
- Agree in advance, in writing on WhatsApp, who covers accidental damage and what counts as normal wear. Silence afterwards is what turns a small problem into a lost deposit.
- Is a security deposit through the platform safer?
- It depends what it covers. Today we hold only rental payments, not deposits - the deposit goes directly to the owner. That is stated on every listing so it is never a surprise at handover.
Seen something that should not be here?
Every listing is reviewed by a person before it goes live. If you find one that is misleading, or you are in a situation that feels unsafe, message us and we will pull it while we look.
