Renting a camera in India: what to check before you pay
5 min read
Renting a camera for a shoot is usually cheaper and far more flexible than buying one you will use twice a year. The trick is comparing listings on the things that actually matter - not just the headline price.
Compare the daily rate and the deposit together
Two listings can show the same daily rate and cost very different amounts, because the refundable deposit is what you pay up front. A lower deposit with a slightly higher day rate can be the cheaper booking for a one-day shoot.
Every listing on RENTAL PAY LO publishes both numbers, so you can compare them without a phone call.
- Add the day rate and the deposit to see the real up-front cost.
- Check whether the deposit is refunded by UPI, and how fast.
- Confirm what is included: body, lens, battery, card, bag.
Inspect at handover, not after
Every rental has two moments: when you receive the gear and when you return it. Do the condition check at the first one, together, on camera. Photograph the body and lens you were handed and send those photos back in the same thread you booked in.
Test the obvious things before you leave the handover: does it power on, does the lens focus, does the card slot read. A five-minute check prevents a "you damaged it" conversation later.
Agree the return quietly and early
Agree the drop-off time and place before the shoot day, not during it after a long wedding. Return-condition expectations - clean lens, charged-or-empty battery, bag included - should be written where both of you can see them.
Common questions
- Is it cheaper to rent or buy a camera in India?
- If you shoot a handful of times a year, renting is almost always cheaper - and you can rent the right camera for each job instead of one compromise body. Buying only wins at high, regular usage.
- What happens if I damage rented camera gear?
- The refundable deposit is what covers agreed damage. That is why inspecting and photographing the gear at handover matters - it protects both sides if a condition question comes up.
