How to rent out your camera gear in India and earn every weekend

6 min read

A camera that sits in a bag between shoots earns nothing. Renting it out is the most direct way to turn idle gear into income - but only if the money, the deposit and the return condition are agreed before the handover. This guide covers how owners actually do that in India.

Price per day, not per shoot

Renters think in days, not events. A photographer who needs a body and a lens for a Saturday wedding will compare your daily rate with the next listing, so a clear day rate converts better than a "per event" price they have to negotiate.

As a rough anchor, mid-range mirrorless bodies rent for a few hundred rupees a day and premium bodies with fast glass go higher. Set your rate at the level where you would still be happy if the item came back with a scuff you did not photograph beforehand.

  • List a real daily rate and a discounted weekly rate if you offer one.
  • Note whether a lens, battery or bag is included, or is an add-on.
  • Charge more for festival and wedding weekends, and say so on the listing.

The deposit is your insurance

The refundable deposit is the whole safety mechanism of a peer-to-peer rental. It should be big enough that a renter returns the gear in the same condition rather than keeping it, and it must be stated on the listing so there are no surprises at handover.

Photograph everything before it leaves your hands, note the serial numbers, and share those photos with the renter in the same WhatsApp thread as the booking. Condition disputes are almost always evidence disputes.

  • Photograph every angle, plus the serial number, before handover.
  • State the deposit amount and when it is refunded on the listing.
  • Agree the return condition in writing before the gear leaves.

Screen the renter in one message

You do not need a background check. You need one message that tells you whether this is a real booking. Ask what they are shooting, when, and where. A scammer will not have a shoot.

Enquiries come in over WhatsApp with a prefilled question from the listing, so the conversation already carries the item, the dates and your price before you reply.

Common questions

How much deposit should I charge for camera rental?
Enough that returning the gear matters more than keeping it - commonly a meaningful fraction of the replacement value. Publish the exact amount on the listing so there is no negotiation at handover.
Do I need insurance to rent out my camera in India?
It is not mandatory, but a refundable deposit plus pre-handover photos covers most ordinary damage disputes. Insurance is a personal decision and worth comparing if you rent high-value gear often.
